ParticipantHey guys.
Hope you are doing well and enjoying your weekend so far!
I am curious, why there is no overlay / backdrop option, when opening elements like “Offcanvas Menu”, “Sliding Modal”, “Side Area”, etc.
There are several downsides, which I want to explain. Of course this is my very own opinion and not some general statement.
If you guys have any other opinions about it or share the same view, I am happy to hear some more input.– As soon as such an area is opened, the focus should be on this specific area. It is some kind of quick access area, with important and specific information.
– As soon as an area is opened, the body scroll is disabled. If there is no additional indication, that a special area is opened, it might be the case they don’t know what it going on. Something should happen with the main page content to point that out.
– There are too many cases where these areas just “fade” into the main page content, the user can’t even recognize, what elements are now part of it and which are not. Here 2 examples:Side Area:

Sliding Modal (Contact Form):

The fact that the main content is still clickable, but not scrollable, might lead into additional confusion. Clicking outside these areas should close them, as the user would expect this, also in terms of accessibility.
Looking forward to some feedback, why this idea might be good and maybe you are able to add some more points to the list, or why this would be actually unnecessary and a very bad idea.
Thanks. -
